The nation's stunning new Art Museum of West Africa (Mowaa) has found itself in the center of area political conflicts during the week it was supposed to – but did not manage – to welcome visitors to the public for the very first time.

The Ambitious Project

Investment and Economic Plans

The initiative has been the idea of entrepreneur Phillip Ihenacho – presently Mowaa's chief executive.

"I want us to have a substantial economic benefit on area populations in the vicinity," he told the press, mentioning that he hoped to make the city "an arts hub."

Mowaa, a charitable local organization, aims at generating over 30,000 employment opportunities and providing over $80m per year to the area arts sector through collaborations and activities.

Investment and Administrative Problems

A disruptive assembly confronted overseas dignitaries at the museum ahead of the opening – compelling them to be quickly removed under official guard.

National leader Bola Tinubu has even become involved to try and resolve the tensions, creating a special task force to do some damage control.

Political Complexities

But how has this become so controversial – and such a public relations crisis?

Much of it stems from internal conflicts at a area administrative level, as it was the former state leader Godwin Obaseki – whose administration finished the previous year – who was a key supporter of the museum.

And it looks like the government of the current leader, a strong supporter of the regional monarch, referred to as the Oba, may want increased control in the initiative. The demonstrators on that day, for case, were demanding that the museum be placed under the authority of the current Oba.
