Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
