Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using these treatments must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
