Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Group

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with rich lore, a diverse cast of personalities, and a gripping narrative featuring divine entities, evil spirits, and dark forces increasing in influence within the city.

Warning: Spoilers for the third episode of Campaign 4 are included.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

The third episode concluded with a huge suspense moment and revealed the initial group of adventurers who will separate from the primary party to begin their own adventure, distinct from the remaining groups.

This warrior group consists of the determined fighter (played by the voice actor), the agile character (Laura), Tyranny (the cast member), Wicander Halovar (the player), and Kattigan (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Given an extensive roster, it was obvious from the start that having everyone at one table would be unfeasible.

This explains, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, connecting the individual narratives before dividing into three smaller tables: Warriors, Planners, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Warrior Group

According to the DM, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who are drawn to a typically action-packed battle-oriented gameplay experience where diplomatic options are rare.

Upon first impression, characters like the reluctant priest the cleric might seem mismatched, but the developments of episode 3 demonstrate why these particular heroes are best suited for the warrior group.

Reasons to Leave

First, the group has a clear idea where to go next after a brutal first encounter with the enemy group.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose passing started the campaign’s events—manipulated the enemy for his personal gain, entering the secret base, striking the character, and swiping all the powerful objects to auction.

The antagonist then settled his obligations and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each character has a specific drive to leave the city the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as the close ally and closest confidant, seeks retribution.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the region and advises that it is a dangerous place.
  • Tyranny and Wicander, having defied his house’s orders to execute the target and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • However, their position as key figures in the powerful family could help the team access places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, The fighter swore a life debt to The savior for his deliverance and will now follow him wherever.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the authorities that control the setting for a range of causes, making remaining behind too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and The character are known criminals.
  • Tyranny and The cleric betrayed the powerful family and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by the family.

This leaves them few options but to travel to the northern region in quest for the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

According to the latest episode’s Cooldown, we learn that the warrior group won’t be around next week, leaving the rest of the players to round up the Explorers and Strategists tables.

Viewers can look forward to learning which adventurers will be assigned to which table in the season’s last Overture episode, available to watch on next week.
