The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a armed takeover in September and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.
