2K Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Lead to Rescue Struggling Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Transition Follows Poor Reception

Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster unveiling last fall.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive a key figure updated staff about this organizational change through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a distinct game identity.

Ismailer noted that the developers is now reimagining the project with a refreshed vision, aiming to better meet gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Recruitment

The news follows a similar move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise development group.

Here is the entire message from Ismailer's memo:

Dear Team—

I know you all just completed your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Last time I shared you all a note, I expressed the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative developers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re eager for that partnership to persist.”

Given your hard work and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s the game demo was informative. It affirmed the promise of a action-packed game but indicated we still had refinements needed. It revealed the requirement for a clearer vision.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the input to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s poised to achieve its promise to our audience.

The trust in this project grows every day. To further the incredible progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Director of 31st Union. After some time of conversations, Ben comes aboard us on the specified date.

His leadership and experience in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having devoted the recent years developing and overseeing some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.

Let’s together in welcoming him soon. We are all looking forward to persist observing the evolution of the game in the weeks to follow.

The President

Experience of the New Head

Brinkman presently holds the role of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, prior to that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Details and Concept

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year alongside a community playtest. At the time, the developers presented the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch states. "Challenge the opponents with unique powers, stakes, and challenges that evolve every round. Will you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or go big, risk it all, and pray your team can secure victory? The choice is in your hands."

Project Ethos has not yet received an official release date or consoles, but enthusiasts can expect further news as production progresses.
